Frequently asked questions

We offer a wide selection of tours throughout the Nordics and Baltics.

The Nordics comprise Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) as well as Finland and Iceland. We also offer tours to Svalbard (part of Norway) and the Faroe Islands (part of Denmark) in the North Atlantic.

The Baltic states include Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

Although we offer several tours that only focus on one country, many of our multi-day-itineraries cover two countries or more.

We offer three main types of tours: self-guided, partly guided and guided.

Most of our tours are self-guided, meaning that you will travel independently. You will receive helpful, detailed information from us so you can confidently navigate every step of the journey. (Note that any included and optional activities will take place in a group with a guide.)

Our self-guided tours include scenic rail tours, cruises along the Norwegian coastal route with Hurtigruten and Havila and winter tours.

See an overview of our self-guided tours and frequently asked questions about self-guided tours.

On our partly guided tours, you travel independently, but parts of the itinerary are with a guide. See an overview of our partly guided tours and frequently asked questions about partly guided tours.

Finally, we offer a selection of guided tours. These are escorted coach or rail tours with a guaranteed departure. See an overview of our guided tours and frequently asked questions about guided tours.

To navigate through our tour offerings, you can use the search bar and search filters on our homepage to narrow down the selection: https://www.authentic-scandinavia.com/tours

You can also chat with Astrid, our AI Travel Specialist (see the chat icon in the lower right corner). Astrid has been trained by our team of travel specialists to navigate through our offerings, making it easier for you to find a tour that matches your preferences. This is especially useful when our office is closed, as many of our travellers are from overseas and in a different time zone.

If you prefer to speak to a human, or are looking for a more complex tour customisation, our team of travel specialists are always eager to assist. Get in touch

At the top of each tour page (e.g. Scandinavian Capitals & Fjords) you will find a dark blue banner just below the intro. The price shown here is the lowest possible package price per person for two people sharing a double or twin room in the Silver tour category. Keep in mind that the price may fluctuate depending on the travel date. Rates are often more expensive during June–August, December and February, as these are the most popular travel months (higher demand).

Click on ‘Check price & book now’ to see the tour price in the booking summary as you select your date, number of travellers, room type(s) and preferred tour category (Step 1 ‘Booking details’). This makes it easy to compare prices for different dates and tour categories.

In Step 2 (‘Extras’) you can customise your itinerary by adding extra nights and experiences. Click on ‘view details’ to see an overview of additional services offered for each day of the itinerary. As you add these, your booking summary will be updated with the new total price. The extras can easily be removed from the basket if you change your mind during the booking process.

These steps are not binding and can be done simply for reference; you can abandon the booking process at any time if you are not ready to commit to a reservation. You can also save your details for later to complete the reservation at a later stage.

A complete overview of included services is specified near the bottom of each tour page.

Most tours can be booked with a choice of hotel category: Silver, Gold or Platinum. This gives you the flexibility to select your preferred level of comfort and price.

Silver is our most attractively priced tour category and offers comfortable, well-selected accommodation throughout your journey. Unless otherwise stated, all overnights include a breakfast buffet and private en-suite bathroom (applies to all travel categories).

Silver typically includes accommodation at good tourist-class hotels equivalent to 3 stars. Silver hotels are generally less centrally located.

During overnight cruises, Silver accommodation includes an inside cabin (no window). Note that it is possible to upgrade to an outside cabin with window for an additional cost (subject to availability).

Whenever unique accommodation is included, Silver includes the more basic alternative.

Gold is our most popular tour category as it includes accommodation at 4-star equivalent hotels, unique properties or historical hotels selected for their atmosphere and/or location. The city hotels are centrally located, offer more amenities and breakfast buffets with a wider selection.

A seaside/outside cabin is included during overnight cruises (with window).

Whenever unique accommodation is included, Gold includes an upgraded alternative, e.g. a room with fjord view, a glass igloo or similar.

Platinum offers an elevated level of comfort at the finest handpicked hotels and unique properties. This tour category includes accommodation in upgraded rooms at 4- or 5-star equivalent hotels or at unique properties selected for their atmosphere and/or location.

An upgraded seaside cabin is included during overnight cruises (with window).

Whenever unique accommodation is included, Platinum includes the more luxurious alternative.

Important: In some locations, due to limited alternatives we have included the same hotel in all categories. Sometimes the room type will differ depending on the category.

In addition to being able to select your preferred hotel category, you can also add extra nights and experiences. Many of our itineraries offer multiple possible start locations as well.

It is possible to combine two or more tours, or to combine parts of different itineraries, for a tour that better matches your preferences. For further details, please see our overview of frequently asked questions about customising your tour.

Our tours are normally bookable approx. one year in advance. Please get in touch with us if you find a tour that piques your interest but is not yet bookable online. Our travel specialists can either quote a price for you or file your request and notify you as soon as the tour is bookable.

As a tour operator, we are dependent on receiving our finalised contracts and rates from our suppliers before we can update next season’s prices.

For most tours, there is a 40-50% child discount up to age 12 or 15 when 1-2 children share a room with two full-paying adults. Infants are usually free of charge when sleeping in their parents’ bed. A baby cot can be added for EUR 15 per night.

To find the exact age policy and pricing for a specific tour, please enter a travel date, number and age of travellers, room type and hotel category (Silver, Gold or Platinum) on the tour page (‘Check price & book now’).

If you combine two or more tour packages, we offer a 5% discount on the lowest priced tour.

We also offer a discount for repeat customers, as well as discounts for friends and family of previous customers.

Our special offers change every month – sign up to our newsletter to get updates on new discounts and travel inspiration.

Please note that it is not possible to combine discounts.
