Trains in Norway offer two categories of seats – standard and Comfort Plus – on long-distance (regional) trains. Standard seats are included for the Silver and Gold tour categories and Comfort Plus is included for Platinum. For local trains, standard seats are included for all categories, as these cannot be guaranteed on all connections.
Please note that the difference between standard seats and Comfort Plus seats is not very big: Comfort Plus seats offer a bit more space, complimentary tea/coffee, power outlets and a table tray.
Trains in Sweden offer 1st- and 2nd-class seats on all long-distance trains (2nd class is included for Silver, 1st class for Gold and Platinum). On overnight trains, a shared compartment is included for Silver, while a private compartment is included for Gold and Platinum. Please note that the standard of overnight trains in Sweden is basic, regardless of category.
Trains in Finland offer standard seats only. On overnight trains, a private compartment with shared toilet and shower facilities is included for Silver (shared compartment when booking a single; upgrade to private possible), while a private compartment with private facilities is included for Gold and Platinum (also when booking a single).
It is possible to upgrade to Plus seating on most train journeys in Norway and to 1st class in Sweden if you are booking a lower tour category. The price of the upgrade will vary, depending on the route and departure time. If you wish to upgrade, please indicate this in the ‘Please tell us’ section in Step 2 of the booking process (‘Extras’) and we will inform you of the extra cost.
Specific seats are reserved on all trains, except on the Flåm Railway, where seating is guaranteed but no specific seat numbers are assigned.
Most stretches have several departures per day, but for each stretch included in our tour packages we have selected a default departure time. This time is based on several factors, including popularity, connecting transport and total time spent at each location.
Please note that in the Nordics trains often cannot be booked or confirmed until approximately 3 months before travel. Departures can sell out quickly, so early booking is strongly recommended. If the default departure time is unavailable, we will book an alternative departure, taking the above considerations into account. We will contact you to discuss your preferences in cases where there are several alternative options.
You will receive an overview of alternative train departure times when we confirm your tour. These can be requested, subject to availability.
If you already know that you would prefer a specific departure on a given day before you submit a booking request, please specify this is the ‘Please tell us’ section in Step 2 of the booking process (‘Extras’). Your request will be accommodated, where possible.
Should you prefer one of the alternative departures mentioned in our tour confirmation, you can let us know after receiving our tour confirmation. Alternative departures are subject to availability.
We do not have a list of train times published on our website, but most stretches have several departures per day. For each stretch included in our tour packages we have selected a default departure time based on several factors, including popularity, connecting transport and total time spent at each location.
In addition, our tour confirmation will list all possible departures, and you will have the opportunity to request an alternative departure. Please note that alternative departures are subject to availability.
We regret that we cannot offer a senior discount, as our contracted supplier rates do not allow additional discounts.
There is normally a 50% child discount on our self-guided rail tours when 1-2 children share a room with two full-paying adults. The child age cutoff varies between 12 and 15, depending on the tour in question.
To find the exact price for all travellers for a specific tour, please enter a travel date, travellers, room type and hotel category (Silver, Gold or Platinum) on the tour page (‘Check price & book now’).
Train operators generally provide alternative transport (such as a replacement bus or the next available train) if a train is cancelled and personnel will be able to advise you on the spot. However, we are always available via telephone to help you navigate the situation and find alternatives if needed.
