Driving allows you to experience a destination at your own pace. Visit places that would otherwise be difficult to reach – small villages, breathtaking viewpoints and remote scenic roads. Our self-drive tours are designed with these gems in mind, making the journey itself unforgettable.
Generally, the tour price includes hotel accommodation with breakfast. The cruise on the Geirangerfjord is also included for tours involving this route. Other ferry crossings must be paid for on the spot (no pre-booking possible); information about the necessary ferry routes and schedules will be provided. A complete overview of the included services is specified for each tour at the bottom of the page.
A rental car is not included in our self-drive tours since many travellers prefer to bring their own car or have access to special rental car deals through their credit card provider. Major rental car companies – such as Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt – have offices throughout the Nordics.
You can start self-drive tours any day of the week during the bookable travel period (usually from May/June until October). When booking a self-drive tour that includes a cruise with Hurtigruten/Havila, please note that not all ships can take cars. Therefore, the date may have to be adjusted by a day or two.
For Scandinavian tours, road maps are not provided as part of the travel documents. We do, however, provide a detailed day-by-day travel itinerary with an overview map showing each day’s drive. In Iceland, you will receive a tablet computer for the duration of the tour that includes a travel app with a road map, travel guide and useful information about the weather, road conditions, etc.
Driving in the Nordic countries, especially in Norway and Iceland, may differ from your previous driving experiences. In the fjord region and mountains in particular, the roads tend to be narrow and winding. This means that the driving time per day may be longer than expected based on the distance alone. To give you a better understanding of the driving involved, we specify both the distance and duration per day for each tour on our website.
Free parking is offered at all the hotels with a countryside location (fjord village, mountain village, etc). In the cities (Oslo, Bergen, Ålesund, Trondheim, Reykjavik, etc.) you will have to pay for parking on the spot – either at the hotel’s private parking garage or a nearby public parking garage. We provide parking information in the travel documents; however, no parking will be booked. The price is normally approx. EUR 20-25 per 24 hours, but can be as much as EUR 35-40.
As a tourist, the following applies regarding driving licences:
Visitors from EU/EEA countries can drive with a valid driving licence issued by their home country.
Visitors from the following countries outside the EU/EEA can use their licence for up to three months if the text is (also) written in the Latin alphabet and includes a picture: Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Egypt, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Macedonia, Malaysia, Mexico, Moldova, Monaco, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, San Marino, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Ukraine, USA and Venezuela.
There is normally a 50% child discount on our self-drive tours when 1-2 children share a room with two full-paying adults. The child age cutoff is usually 11 years for our Iceland tours (note: only 1 child per room since the countryside hotels do not have rooms that can accommodate 4) and 12 for tours in Scandinavia.
To find the exact price for all travellers for a specific tour, please enter a travel date, travellers, room type and hotel category (Silver or Gold) on the tour page (‘Check price & book now’).
Travel documents will be sent by e-mail approximately one month before travel. For last-minute bookings, they will be sent as soon as possible after receipt of full payment.
Included in the travel documents are a detailed day-by-day travel itinerary, an address list, parking information and ferry schedules. You will also receive travel proof of payment (vouchers and e-tickets) to present to the individual service providers during your trip.
