The Golden Train and Gondola from Åndalsnes

The Rauma Railway, thanks to its famous “Golden Train”, has rightfully earned its reputation as “the most scenic rail journey in Europe” (Lonely Planet). The view from the train’s windows offers the most breathtaking sights: imposing mountain cliffs and striking green rivers which stand out among the wonderful landscape will leave you with beautiful memories and pictures to share with your loved ones.

Your journey starts at Åndalsnes Railway Station, where a train host will welcome you on board the Golden Train. As the train leaves from Åndalsnes it weaves through the beautiful scenery at a relaxed pace to enable you to take in the view and capture the high peaks of Trollveggen, the iconic Kylling bridge and the sublime Verma waterfalls.

As you go, the train host will share the stories of the train itself which was secretly used by Norwegians during World War II to transport gold away from German hands at the time of occupation. You will also be provided with more fascinating information on the train’s historical impact and symbolism as well as about the people who have dared to settle among the sharp peaks and brave the river’s current. Before returning to Åndalsnes, a quick stop of about 30 minutes at Bjorli station will give you the opportunity to step outside and appreciate the Norwegian peaceful nature.

Back in Åndalsnes, just across the railway station you will find the Romsdal Gondola, which you can use either before or after the train journey. The cable car whisks you to the top of Mount Nesaksla, 708 metres above sea level, in just 7 minutes. At the summit, you will be rewarded with sweeping 360-degree views, the chance to enjoy a meal or drink at Eggen Restaurant, or time to explore the surrounding mountain trails before heading back down at your leisure during opening hours.
