5: Sognefjord’s Glacier Landscapes by Bus

Discover how glaciers have shaped the spectacular landscapes of the inner Sognefjord on this scenic journey through fjords, valleys and mountains. This full-day excursion combines dramatic scenery with fascinating insights into the powerful forces that have created Norway’s landscape.

Departing from Skjolden, you will travel along the shores of Lustrafjord and through the lush Jostedalen Valley towards Breheimsenteret, the visitor centre for Jostedalsbreen and Breheimen National Parks.

Designed to resemble a glacier split by a crevasse, the visitor centre offers an engaging introduction to Norway’s glaciers. Through exhibitions and film, you will discover how ice has carved valleys, shaped rivers and influenced the communities living in this remarkable region. From the centre, you can also enjoy views of Nigardsbreen, a striking blue-ice glacier tongue extending from Jostedalsbreen, mainland Europe’s largest glacier.

The journey then continues through spectacular mountain landscapes towards Sognefjellet, while your guide shares stories about the glaciers, mountains and local communities that have shaped the region over thousands of years.

Depending on conditions, several scenic stops may be made along the way. You may admire the impressive Feigumfossen waterfall or discover the fascinating stories behind Flaummerket, where flood levels from past catastrophic events are marked into the rock.

Combining spectacular scenery, fascinating natural history and impressive glacier views, this excursion is an excellent way to discover the dramatic landscapes of the Sognefjord region.
