Funken Lodge

Funken Lodge offers a special way to experience Svalbard, combining modern comfort with a historical setting. The hotel is located at the top of “the Hill” and gives you great views of Longyearbyen and the nearby Lars and Longyear glaciers.

The building was first opened in 1947 as a housing and dining area for workers at the Store Norske Spitsbergen Coal Company. It was also used for company events and official guests. Because of its design and interior, it was seen as one of the most important buildings in Longyearbyen. In the winter of 2017/2018, it was fully renovated and reopened in February 2018. The hotel now offers a high standard of comfort while still keeping its original character.

Throughout the hotel, you will find old photos, maps and newspaper clippings that tell the story of Svalbard and the building itself. Funken Lodge is not just a place to sleep: it is a comfortable and welcoming space with a strong connection to the island’s history.
